2025 Catarino and Evangelina Hernández Research Fellowship in Latino History

The Catarino and Evangelina Hernández Research Fellowship in Latino History is given annually for the best research proposal relating to the history of Latinos in Texas.

The proposal, which should be no longer than two pages, should specify the purpose of the research, the need for the money, and a description of the end product (article, book, or exhibition). Please include a complete vita with the application. The winning recipient must be present at the TSHA Annual Meeting to receive the award. The $1000 award will be announced at the Association's Annual Meeting. Judges may withhold the award at their discretion.

Individuals wishing to apply should submit an application form (and attach the proposal and a curriculum vita) by November 15, 2025. Only electronic copies submitted through the Apply Now link on this page and received by the deadline will be considered.

Catarino and Evangelina Hernández were Mexican immigrants who made their home in Texas beginning in the 1950s. Among their children and grandchildren are college and public administrators, health professionals, and businesspeople. Like many other citizens of Mexican heritage, they were as proud of their roots as of their new homeland. The Fellowship recognizes that their story, like the stories of all Latinos, is worthy of investigation, preservation, and illumination for generations of Texans to come.
