Our education programs, begun in 1939, seek to encourage and improve the teaching of Texas history in our schools. We are dedicated to fostering a deep appreciation and understanding of Texas history among learners of all ages. Our education initiatives provide engaging resources, interactive experiences, and scholarly content for students, educators, and lifelong learners.

Texas History Day

Texas History Day is a competition affiliated with the National History Day program offering an opportunity for Texas, U.S., and world history students in grades six through twelve to demonstrate their comprehension of history through papers, projects, performances, video demonstrations, and interpretive websites. Thousands of students vie for prizes and recognition in the Texas History Day program while learning history and improving their research and communication skills.

Walter Prescott Webb Historical Society

The Walter Prescott Webb Historical Society works through college and university history departments to encourage students to discover, research, write, and publish the history of Texas. The program provides the organizational framework for learning activities in colleges and universities.

Junior Historians of Texas

The Junior Historians of Texas is an extracurricular program for students in grades 4–12. The program encourages students to explore local, regional, and state history. Walter Prescott Webb, the famed historian and past TSHA Executive Director, founded Junior Historians in 1939 making it the oldest of the Association’s education programs. More than 40 active chapters exist today.

Educator Professional Development

TSHA offers educator workshops designed to support Texas teachers with practical, classroom-ready strategies grounded in trusted historical resources. Our professional development opportunities help educators integrate TEKS-aligned content, primary sources, and inquiry-based learning into existing curriculum while strengthening students' historical thinking skills and engagement with Texas history.

Education Journals

The Texas Historian is one of the few historical journals in the nation dedicated to publishing the work of secondary students in Texas. Touchstone is the undergraduate research journal of the Walter Prescott Webb Historical Society, our college-level educational program. All TSHA members at the Educator level will receive these journals as a benefit of membership.

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary in 2026, Texans have a unique opportunity to reflect on the state’s role in the American story. Through exhibitions, programs, educational initiatives, and community events across Texas, Texas America250 encourages celebration, reflection, and commemoration at both local and statewide levels. At the Texas State Historical Association, we are proud to support this important moment through our mission-driven work in history education and public engagement, including Texas History Day, and we invite students, educators, and communities to explore this milestone in meaningful ways.

On July 4, 2026, we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the greatest nation in the history of the world. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Long may these ideals live in the heart of every Texan and every American. May God bless all who have defended our freedoms that we enjoy each day. And God bless the United States of America.
