Randolph B. “Mike” Campbell Award

Award Amount: $1,500


The Randolph B. “Mike” Campbell Award is given annually to the authors of the two best new entries published in the Handbook of Texas. Entries must have been published in the preceding year to be eligible for consideration.  No action is necessary on the part of the authors.

For more than five decades, Mike Campbell led a distinguished career at the University of North Texas and devoted his time and energy to the TSHA. The author of several seminal works in Texas history, Campbell became both Regents Professor in 1988 and the Lone Star Chair in Texas History at UNT inm 2013. He earned the UNT Foundation Eminent Faculty Award and received numerous teaching awards over the course of his career. Campbell is a prominent and influential member of the Texas State Historical Association, having served as president from 1993 to 1994, the Association’s inaugural Chief Historian from 2008 to 2017, and as editor-in-chief of the Southwestern Historical Quarterly from July 2005 to April 2017. Campbell’s commitment to the Handbook of Texas proved foundational to the broad expansion and development of special projects and diverse new content.

The award is open to all authors other than TSHA staff members, and entries will be judged on research quality, readability, and topic significance. All eligible entries will be considered, and winners will be selected by TSHA’s Handbook committee. The author of the first-place entry will receive a monetary award of $1,500 while the author of the second-place entry will receive $1,000. Winners will be announced at TSHA’s Fellows Luncheon and Presentation of Awards, held during the Association’s Annual Meeting. The recipients must be present at the TSHA Annual Meeting to receive the award.

On July 4, 2026, we will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence and the birth of the greatest nation in the history of the world. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Long may these ideals live in the heart of every Texan and every American. May God bless all who have defended our freedoms that we enjoy each day. And God bless the United States of America.
